Dublin International starts drilling in Tanzania
11-12-00 A subsidiary of a Canada-based oil firm, Dublin International Petroleum (Tanzania), has started drilling for oil at Mandawa in southern Lindi Region of the oil-poor Tanzania, a senior official said.
Assistant Commissioner for Energy in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Victus Prosper said that the firm started drilling for oil last month in the 1.25 mm-acre Mandawa concession encompassing a Jurassic rift basin.
"Previous exploration by the company provided evidence of existence of light reservoir oil as well as the presence of thick, reservoir quality Jurassic sands," he said, adding that numerous promising structures have been identified on the concession below a thick salt layer.
Meanwhile, Prosper disclosed that there are several other licensed firms active in exploration stages as Canop Tanzania on Mafia Island, Kisiju in Kisangira in Coast region, Ndovu Resources at Nyuni and Selous in Morogoro region and Antrim Resources in Pemba and Unguja Islands.
In September, former Tanzanian Minister for Energy and Minerals Abdallah Kigoda said that a dozen of the oil giants had expressed keen interest in searching for oil in the deep-sea waters.
The companies are expected by next April to carry out offshore oil exploration in Tanzania, making it the most active country in oil exploration in sub-Saharan Africa.
Kigoda said that deep-sea seismic surveys conducted by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and Western Geophysical Company of Britain since last year suggested that there are many deposits of sedimentary rocks on the offshore, a type of rock which stores oil.
The minister said that the data was acquired in the deep-sea areas stretching for 11,000 km from Mozambique in the south to Kenya in the north in depths ranging from 300 meters to 3, 500 meters at a cost of $ 10 mm.

Seismic recording of 160 line kilometers distributed over 10 lines was completed by mid October 1999. Seismic processing of these lines enabled the interpretation for precision mapping, selecting structures, and evaluating best ranking prospects and leads. Dublin International completed this work in December 1999.
